Company Event Welcome and Thank-You Speeches

Adaptable opening and closing remarks for the organiser or company leader, with clear handovers to the emcee and placeholders for approved facts.

This guide focuses on welcome and thank-you remarks delivered by a company leader or organiser. Agree who opens and closes the programme: an emcee can give the hosting welcome, while a leader may give a separate address. Avoid repeating the same message in both.

This guide provides a structure and adaptable samples for a company event welcome speech. For the emcee’s own opening (the hosting script), see the corporate event script template.

Structure of a welcome address

The four-part outline below can help you prepare a welcome address. Fit it to the speaking slot agreed in the programme rather than a universal duration.

  1. Greeting and acknowledgement: welcome the audience and acknowledge any guests of honour, partners or visiting colleagues by name and title (confirmed beforehand).
  2. Purpose of the event: one or two sentences on why the company is gathering tonight. Keep it specific: “We are here to recognise the teams that delivered [PROJECT/GOAL]” is stronger than “We are here to celebrate another great year.”
  3. The main point: one short message. This could be a milestone (“This year we reached [ACHIEVEMENT]”), a theme for the evening (“Tonight’s theme is [THEME], and you will see it in [PROGRAMME ELEMENT]”), or a forward-looking direction (“Next year our focus moves to [INITIATIVE]”). Pick one, not three.
  4. Handover: close with a clear cue that returns the room to the emcee. “I will now hand you over to our host for the evening, [EMCEE NAME], to take us through the programme” is direct and gives the emcee a clean entry.

Sample welcome address (annual dinner, formal tone)

All names and details are illustrative. Replace every placeholder with your confirmed event details.

“Good evening, everyone. On behalf of [COMPANY NAME], welcome to our [YEAR] annual dinner.

I would like to acknowledge [GUEST OF HONOUR NAME AND TITLE], who has joined us tonight, and our colleagues from [OFFICE/REGION] who have travelled to be here.

This evening we recognise the people and teams behind [SPECIFIC ACHIEVEMENT OR PROJECT]. [One factual sentence about the achievement.]

Thank you for a year of [QUALITY, e.g. dedication, resilience, collaboration]. Enjoy the evening.

I will now hand you over to [EMCEE NAME] to take us through the programme.”

Sample welcome address (D&D, relaxed tone)

“Good evening, team. Welcome to our [YEAR] dinner and dance.

Before we get into the programme, I want to say one thing: [MAIN POINT, e.g. ‘this year we hit [MILESTONE] and every person in this room contributed to that’]. So tonight is yours.

We have [BRIEF PROGRAMME TEASE, e.g. ‘games, prizes and a few surprises’] lined up, and our emcee [EMCEE NAME] is going to run the show. Enjoy it. Over to you, [EMCEE FIRST NAME].”

For a milestone celebration, place these remarks within your company anniversary programme so speeches, recognition and the final toast have clear handovers.

Practical notes

  • Confirm every name, title and pronunciation with the individuals before the event. Do not assume a title or honorific.
  • If the event has a guest of honour, check with their office whether they prefer to be introduced by name and title, or by a specific form of address.
  • Share your planned remarks with your emcee so they can prepare a matching introduction and a smooth pickup after your address.
  • If you are not a confident public speaker, rehearse the handover line once. A clear transition helps the emcee know when to take over.

Closing thank-you remarks

A leader’s thank-you and the emcee’s final announcements serve different purposes. Agree whether you need one or both, their order and the final handover. Use the allotted speaking slot and avoid duplicating acknowledgements.

Thank the organising team, connect the evening to its purpose and confirm who speaks next. Mention transport, photographs or other next steps only if they are confirmed for your event.

Illustrative closing address; replace or remove all placeholders before use:

Before we close, thank you to [ORGANISING TEAM] for the care that went into tonight, and to everyone here for being part of [EVENT PURPOSE].

[OPTIONAL APPROVED FORWARD-LOOKING MESSAGE.]

I will hand back to [EMCEE NAME] for our final announcements. Thank you.

If this is the last address, replace the handover with the agreed farewell. Check any achievements or future plans with the company before reading them publicly. These are adaptable examples, not James’s personal script or a record of a real event.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a company event welcome speech be?

Agree a slot with the organising committee and emcee. Rehearse the actual remarks against that slot, allowing for acknowledgements and applause, and remove material that repeats another speaker.

Should the welcome speech be scripted or improvised?

A short written outline is one option. If exact wording or formal acknowledgements matter, have those lines approved and written out. Write your opening line, your main point and your closing handover, and speak naturally between them.
